Why Did I Replace my Nuova Simonelli Musica with a Breville Dual Boiler?

I receive this question a lot. Many comments on YouTube and Instagram from people asking why did you sell your Musica, a heat exchanger, NSF certified machine with a machine that many perceive as an appliance, such as the Breville Dual Boiler (BDB). My answer is, for two main reasons (and many little ones)

First, temperature control. With the Musica, I had absolutely no temperature control or at least a way to confirm whatever control I had. The machine lacked a PID or a display of any sort. The only way you can control brew temperature is through the cooling flush technique. The cool flush is fine but tricky. The flush depends on how long has the machine been idle for and it’s a total guess game. You’re basically relying on what you think is an appropriate cooling flush to achieve what you think is the right temperature. This is exactly like driving around with a car without a speedometer, you could be going 50 or 60 or even 70 mph and you really have no idea.

Second, brew pressure. The Musica shockingly didn’t have an OPV! Yes, a $2700 machine without an OPV. After some research, it turns out that the early versions of this machine were shipped without an OPV and later Nuova Simonelli decided to add one. Mine was built in 2011 so no OPV for me. Crazy that Nuova Simonelli would cheap out on that considering the amount of money they are charging. Also, the machine lacks a brew pressure gauge, again another place where Nuova Simonelli cut corners. So no OPV and no way for me to know what the brew pressure is but even if I did know, I can’t adjust it because of the lack of OPV.

Many other small reasons moved me to the BDB. Things like, ability to descale easily, ability to backflush easily (machine can run the descale and backflush cycles while you can go do something else), water tank that can be filled out from the front or the back of the machine, water tank level display with light! I can go on and on about all the small smart little features that add up to a machine that is a joy to use.

I also made a YouTube video on my channel summarizing those reasons. Link here: https://youtu.be/aXoZNBjH2dE
